Without doubt one of the most influential of the vintage California artists was Nelbert Chouinard. Although an accomplished painter and artist in her own right, she was a major force in the California art world and remains so today. As the founder of the Chouinard Art Institute, she touched the lives and creativity of dozens of artists and film creatives. Today her legacy lives on as the California Institute of Arts, one of the nation’s foremost school of art. This lovely painting is an fine example of her earlier work, demonstrating her East Coast roots. She was born in Minnesota and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
