There were a number of well-known and prolific artists that made their home in the greater Pasadena area. Many migrated from the mid-west or the east coast, drawn by the spectacular beauty, wonderful weather and the expanding art colonies. Some, such as Walt Lee, grew up in Pasadena. Walt, in fact, was raised on a farm right by Lake Ave. There is a good chance that our current gallery is located on the land where he would have raised chickens and tended cows!

Orrin White, the painting of the Mexican church seen here is one of his, was also a Pasadena resident and painted many splendid and colorful paintings of the area mountains and in particular its canyons. While much of our city has been paved over and built up, one can still see the incredible natural beauty around us that inspired so many of these local artists.

Many of her best known works focus on native California trees, such as the sycamore, the Pacific Ocean and the California deserts and mountains. She led quite an artistic life, was married five times but chose to keep “Cromwell” as her working name. (She was born Catherine Strode)

She studied art in Chicago but made the move out West to California in the 1920′s, living throughout Southern California before finally settling in Laguna Beach. She also kept a studio in the Palm Springs area and produced an extensive body of work showing that region’s desert and mountain landscapes.

She studied under some of the California greats, such as Anna Althea Hills and Edgar Payne. One of the interesting facts surrounding her work is that a painted she did of San Juan Capistrano hung over the desk of Edgar Hoover of FBI fame.

Walt was born in 1888, on a farm quite near to what is now the corner of Lake and Colorado in Pasadena. Hard to imagine a farm in that location but it was not that long ago.

His pictures covered much of the landscapes around Southern California and captured beautiful images of a time gone by. This painting in particular shows a scene we would not see today–gypsies camping by the riverbed in Newhall! This area has really grown up and it would be tough to find that location today, although chances are it is quite near to where the Metrolink train tracks run. Drop by the shop to see this gem, it is worth a visit.

Although an accomplished painter and artist in her own right, she was a major force in the California art world and remains so today. As the founder of the Chouinard Art Institute, she touched the lives and creativity of dozens of artists and film creatives. Today her legacy lives on as the California Institute of Arts, one of the nation’s foremost school of art. This lovely painting is an fine example of her earlier work, demonstrating her East Coast roots. She was born in Minnesota and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
